Intro
As a longtime DoorDash user, I've always appreciated the app's thoughtful design and user experience. This replica design was an opportunity to practice my skills by recreating key components and layouts. I introduced subtle changes to reflect my personal style while maintaining the integrity of the original design.
The process
To create the components I would first have to take a deep look into the app and see what are the most common components and find the color values used in the app. I quickly noticed the most reused components included search bar, chips bar, restaurant cards, and a persistent CTA once a user adds something to their cart.
I took this and started to create a component system to recreate the components. During this time I also set a grid for the app to follow consistent spacing throughout the design. I also thought to add my own flare it would be fun to switch up the iconography style and the food filters. The outcome was an app that was almost indistinguishable.
I handed my mirrored phone to my friend and he was trying to order, not noticing it wasn't the actual app.
Learning
Through this process I learned a lot about layout and component consistency, as well as inserting branding into a product without making it overwhelming. Small inserts of the Dashpass logo, as well as hints of their signature red and green colors made the app feel unique to them while the rest of the app made room for the food photography to be at the forefront of the experience.
